Transitioning your Career to AWS and DevOps
Follow the below steps according to your pace and interest.
- Focus 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗯𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 on the services, don’t try to rush
- First, 𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗪𝗦 (or any other cloud of your choice) completely, then move to DevOps
- If you choose to go for AWS Developer, make sure you are good with 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴, and if you are going for DevOps role, minimal programming is desired, as there are many companies, that expect you to code.
- Programming language can be any, preferably 𝗣𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴 for DevOps.
- The services that you mention before the interviewer, you need to be good at them, avoid the services that you have very basic knowledge on, as if asked you would be blank, as that creates an impression of not having enough knowledge.
- Connect with 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗢𝗽𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 and ask about their real projects, how they work & what all they cover.
- 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀, I have noticed in the interviews taken, candidate says, I have worked on an e-commerce website, or a retailing platform which is three-tier application, I have created VPC etc, please note that real world projects aren’t this way. Try to say we managed the infra using IaC.
- Focus on Iac tools, preferably 𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺
- Be 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 with your 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁, as interviewers focus more on it, in-out you need to know everything about project.
- Mention working on tools like 𝗝𝗜𝗥𝗔, or any ticketing tools, preferably JIRA would be good, this frames an impression of real hands-on.
- Be consistent regarding your 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀-𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲, avoid mugging up internet questions and answers, as nowadays the interviewer asks questions related to your project and some scenario based ones, so your practice is the key to your success.
- Regarding DevOps, try to avoid covering each and every tool, if you just focus on 𝗚𝗶𝘁, 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗞𝘂𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀 it’s more than enough.
- At least one 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 tool should be known, Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana or ELK, select any.
- Watch 𝗨𝗱𝗲𝗺𝘆 lectures, for the AWS - Stéphane Maarek course on Solutions Architect Associate.
- Regarding 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, having one is good, but not necessary, at the end all that matters is your knowledge
- For better insights on AWS and Kubernetes, I would recommend watching Cloud With Raj on 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗯𝗲, who is a Principle Solution Architect at AWS, also watch system designs as they are the ones that need focus.
